In the Mix -Amsterdam Dance Event

The Unconventional Tourist has returned!  Amsterdam was incredible.. If you haven't seen it I suggest you go, there is something for everyone. From art to coffee shop's to icebar's and prostitutes(in windows), yes Amsterdam has got it all, and if you managed to stumble your way to Amsterdam in the third week of October you can throw Amsterdam Dance Event(ADE) into the mix.

ADE's warm welcome in the city

Sander Van Doorn @ Escape
ADE certainly was a one of a kind of festival and conference. 1 day conference, 3 days non stop parties. Dozens of types of electronic dance music and events to choose from. However, this tourist happens to be  a Trance aficionado so I ended up going to events like Ferry Corsten vs Sander van Doorn @ Escape and the hugely popular Top 100 DJ awards party.  It was incredible the amount of energy in the clubs at these events, hundreds of people all happy, dancing their asses off enjoying life, music and the ability to hear. It warms the heart ( Faith in humanity++).

Markus Schulz randomly shows up @ Escape

One thing I will say though.. some passionate people can also be rude, I love Armin Van Buuren as much as the next Trance aficionado but man we really need to work on our people skills.. when the wrong result occurs at the Top 100 DJ party.. David Guetta won this year instead of Armin(yes.. I agree it should have been Armin and not someone with commercialized crap), I don't like it any more than the next Trance fan, but at least I was not rude enough to boo the man on stage (Faith in humanity--).

The video below shows Armin passing the crown to Guetta, you can hear some booing in the background...

Moving on to better memories, I got to see first hand how the pro's like Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz, Sander van Doorn, Ferry Corsten ,Carl Cox and David Guetta mix their sets, really fascinating how one can introduce buildups and new sounds entirely by mixing. Now this what I consider the main type of DJ(traditional), the other uses slightly different equipment then the standard turntable/CDJ+mixer combo.(Watch the video below to see how the fantastic Industry Icon Carl Cox DJ's on Pioneer's newest CDJ/Mixer combo) . I was lucky enough to take a crash course in using Abelton and a midi controller with launchpads to check out how the other type of DJ mixes and I have to say it's a lot more work then the traditional DJ since you have to take care of each individual sound separately in your set instead of playing whole tracks and mix them up piece by piece.

Armin @ Top 100 DJ awards
One has to wonder how life is for the big name DJ's (like Armin, Markus, Sander and Carl), I got to talk to a few of them and one thing that I found in common is passion, passion for the music, passion for the fans. They love what they do. I never once heard them say oh it's about the money, it's about getting my name out there. These people are genuinely interested in providing the listener with a journey through their music, these people care about the (music)industry and how it affects us. I've experienced it time and time again, how fun and happy people get around their music(no pun intended about the happiness, i know sometimes drugs are involved ;P) and the big kicker? They aren't deluded about their fame, they don't have a f*ck me I'm famous attitude like Tommy Lee,they are generally down to earth &  humble people, some of these guys have families. Hell some even have degrees in other areas other than music (Armin has a law degree)..

The last 4 days have been an eyeopener , as a guy who is fully in love with this kind of music, attending this festival was a dream come true but as a good man once put it, "All good things must come to an end" ..  I guess it's back to reality, and back to schoolwork for now until i get that itch to wander elsewhere, who knows where I will go next? maybe I'll finally wander down to Stockholm .. everyone is already talking about the yearly film fest in November (helloooo Keira Knightly!).

Traveling like me

Warning : Massive blog post due to my procrastination on a Project :)

I tend to do a lot of traveling, and while some times it would be nice to be disconnected from technology and others. I unfortunately can not afford to be too far disconnected.
Keep in mind.. I am still a student(currently studying in Uppsala,Sweden for a Masters degree in Artificial Intelligence and Medicine), and I also occasionally work for my old companies.

If you haven't guessed by now I am a technology geek, My jobs usually involve me staring at something with a screen so I tend to be fascinated with all the new applications and technology that is out or coming out, but how do i stay updated while wandering around ?? what do I bring with me when I visit a new place?

Most travelers will tell you to bring a map, your passport, money ,your camera, and a guide book

The Unconventional Tourist on the other hand..  would tell you to bring a Smart-phone, your passport, credit cards, debit cards, your camera, a tablet or mini laptop(or regular laptop if it is not one of those massive 17.3" beasts)

Why should you bring the above things? A Smart-phone now replaces your need for paper copies of things, most companies(i.e Airlines and hotels, even some hostels) allow you to checkin just by showing the confirmation email.
A godsend to travelers world wide

Need to figure out where that nightclub is in the city you have never been to before? : Google maps is your friend.

Camera Battery die? No problem use your Smart-phone.. most of the newer models have a camera built that is as good as the lowest range of digital consumer cameras.

Are you an obsessive, compulsive social media whore? :  Your Smart-phone will let you "check-in" to random places in a new city with applications like the popular Facebook, Twitter and now Google Plus, you can even post pictures of that fancy urinal you saw in your Hostel or hotel ;) and of course status updates so you can be the envy of all your virtual friends!
Unique urinals in the St.Christophers Hostel @ Amsterdam

For the items in-between the Smart Phone and the laptop, I believe they need no further explanation other than, without your passport or money you wont be getting far.

Although keep in mind EU people can usually walk through the borders with little more than there national Identity cards.

Credit cards have always been useful while traveling, however newer technology(well not really so new.. but the lazy people over at visa finally allowed banks to access their transaction network over the bank debit systems)  this now means you can do away with that pesky credit card and instead instantly be poorer by using your debit.(Warning: check your bank for the % fee when using your debit over visa in a foreign country)

Typical Visa Debit card, ask your bank today if they have one

Favorite past time of the traveler waiting for their connection
Now then why the tablet or laptop:  No no I don't mean an Ipad for you Apple people, I'm talking about a tablet like the Acer Iconia or the Archos tablets. These essentially will preform all the things you need while on the go, you tube, internet surfing, emailing, Angry birds in HD, etc..  you can also use your regular laptop.. the reason why I list the regular laptop is for one simple reason.. the wireless chipsets in the newer laptops have the ability to inject packets..

For the not so tech savey people, I'm talking about "borrowing" wifi. Welcome to 2011 people.. Wifi is available in most places even in some planes(Delta Airlines anyone?).. This is primarily the reason why you can usually see me online even in the most remote place..

Some people probably wonder how is it that I go about Traveling? Do I always book tickets well in advance? do I ever have a plan, how do I make sure I am not poor when I travel?

These questions are easily answered,  Usually you can get really good deals by booking WELL in advance,  but sometimes it can be beneficial to book last-minute.

Look for resellers on budget Airlines like RyanAir, EasyJet, STAtravel.

The airlines aren't solely the primary method of travel, you can even take  trains, or ferries! Think EUrail, and Europe Ferries

DISCOUNTS, DISCOUNTS DISCOUNTS..  Student life is awesome, yes you can say we are generally poor, but we also have access to many travel discounts and often stay at Hostels.

Hotels vs Hostels

What's the difference?

Forget about this movie, Hostels are not this
When I started traveling I was used to family vacations to Cuba or the Domincan Republic.. you know all those all-inclusive type of resorts. Here staying in a Hotel is pretty much it, you get the  perks of your "own" room, clean sheets every morning, beautiful view etc..

Hostels, on the other hand are not strictly better than Hotels, but. I highly recommend them. Here is usually what you get: A bed(these are usually bunk beds), clean sheets, lockers, access to the shower, maybe some wifi, meeting some cool people/making friends.

When traveling it isn't ALWAYS about comfort, keep that in mind.. all you really need is just a bed and a place to store your stuff and take a shower. A hostel is usually MUCH MUCH cheaper,  and it can be really fun to meet other people who are usually sharing the room(although you can opt for a 'single dorm' if it is in your budget')

Actual Hostel

Cost for 1 night in a hotel: $100 EUR, cost for 4 nights in a Hostel $100 EUR. :)

Eating/Sustaining Life
I love European cities, why? because generally if you do a bit of legwork you can find a cheap 'local' hangout or my favorite sometimes is to use the local super foodmarkets.. they usually have a Sandwich, Chips and a Pop deal.  mm BLT with Doritos chips and Dr.Pepper.

Don't forget the local farmers market or the market square, sometimes there are 'street' carts that have really delicious food. Much more cost effective then going to a restaurant every night you are traveling.

American travelers, be warned... there are no IN-N-OUT burgers in this part of the world(Europe and etc..), the meals are not the "massive stuff your face meals" as a close friend put it. You may be surprised to see portions here in Europe are significantly smaller.
yes I'll have two number 9's, a number 9 large, a number 6 with extra dip, a number 7 large, two number 45's, one with cheese and a large soda

Do I ever have a plan?

Pretty much no.. I tend to do things randomly, that being said I see a city by wandering around the streets. It's always nice to drop by and see the local University, Tourist attractions are usually advertised everywhere and it may be fun to do them, certainly I have done my fair share but I never go with the INTENT on doing them. You can usually pick up a events magazine in the city you are in, this advertises specific festivals that are on going, unique events in the city.. although if you go to a country where you do not speak the language, just whip out that smart phone and use google translate :)

You can find some pretty interesting and crazy stuff in random cities, things like the Amsterdam Red light Pub crawl, or la Tomotina festival in Spain and quite possibly the weirdest thing I experienced was being asked to dress up as a Mascot for one of the nations in Uppsala.

                                                                                                                       Mascot  suit VG Nation

Well there you have it,  I think I have given you a bit of an  insight into how I travel, this is by no means a comprehensive set of tip and tricks.  I think I should spread these out over the life of this blog.. Should make for some interesting entries!

Bye for now, The Unconventional Tourist

Houseboats and future travels

Coming to Sweden I have met some pretty interesting people, people I can call my friends..those of you who know me know I don't quite consider everyone I meet a friend or an acquaintance I usually just play along and act nice at the same time not really caring much, but these people seem to be genuinely interested in me so I can safely call them friends.

On the subject of friends,  everyone knows we can have weird conversations with them.. be it anything from from what would you do if you were the last person on earth to I wonder how life would be like if you were to live on a house boat....

This is what today's blog is about.. houseboats. life on the high seas. Yarr I'm not talking about being all action hero-y like Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean or  being all hot and bothered like Jesse Jane in Pirates(yes it is real movie).

I think the majority of us are so used to life on the land that we can forget how cool it can be to take a cruise or enjoy life on the water.. If any of you are documentary buff's I implore you to watch the BBC's Oceans and the BBC's Human planet. There are whole villages that live life on the water.

My friend and I were discussing the subject of living life on a boat. In Uppsala we see many boats hanging out on the canal docks, some are just small fishing boats while others have a full out glass pane and garden on them.

I for one think it would be awesome to take a year or two and travel around like that. Think about it, owning  a houseboat means you have a method of transport and you get to visit practically all the continents in the world. Although at the same time, our discussion turned into a cost effective problem.. how much would you pay if you were touring around Europe on your houseboat(docking taxes), as well as a service problem.. Would you get internet service via Satellite, would it even be reliable? And my all time favorite would you be able to even get a girl back from the bar to your houseboat without her thinking you were lame? What if you were wearing a suit ala Barney style on "How I met your mother". The suit idea always seems to work for him ;)

Would you be paying taxes in the countries that you are visiting if you lived and worked there for a few months? How would you deal with mail? Would you even be able to get electricity on the boats? Which countries would you even be visiting?

These are all good questions, I don't really have answers for these yet..well maybe I can  say I would be starting from England and then be sailing  to Spain, with a quick 2 month stop to Ibiza during summer(hello SPACE Ibiza) and then onwards to Italy and then Greece but this is all speculation for now..  perhaps the Unconventional tourist will have to try it out one day..

Wandering through life

For as long as I remember, I have never felt fully at home in one particular area or country.. I guess it has to do with how I was brought up. My family has always encouraged the kids to go out and see the world and make something of ourselves. I am the first of the family to graduate from a university in Canada and have since taken to wandering about the world.

Let me explain something first: I am 22 years old, Male, Bulgarian born  with a Canadian Citizenship. I have a Bachelor of Computing Degree in Computer Science with an area of Application in Neuroscience. I have held a few jobs here and there and have lived in Bulgaria, Canada and now Sweden(for a Masters in Artificial Intelligence and Medicine)

This blog will serve as a place for me to share with friends and the rest of the world what it is like to be me. It will hold travel content, random amusing postings, rants, general life advice and other odd's and ends.

Let's start the blog off by why I chose the name "The Unconventional Tourist"?

I can not take the credit for this name, it came about as a comment on how I traveled  when I was in England earlier this year. The name coined by my best friends "Sister" explains how I stumble around when going to a new place or country.. this may involve going to a random event, specifically visiting a store or participating in workshops and classes, and  other things that a normal tourist (i.e one that walks around with a group and has a plan)would not do. That being said I mostly do things solo. Not being bound by a group or organized tour means I get to have fun and see every nook and cranny of a city or an area.

So far this is my first foray into the wonderful world of blogging. Please do leave some comments and let me know how I'm doing or whether you would like me consider a specific topic to blog about.
